WBTHC 3 v Northumbria 3
After a bitterly disappointing performance against Jesmond Parish Church, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth faced another daunting challenge against Northumbria St. Georges -
With a first choice squad this was already a difficult assignment but with the news that the spine of the team had been called up to play for the 2s things were made harder. Throw in that they took to the field with just 10 men and the task became impossible. Constant overlaps, electric pace in their game and some poor goalkeeping allowed George’s to race into a three goal lead with just ten minutes gone. But instead of heads dropping the ten men of Tyne were galvanised and started to fight for every ball, create chances and start to put George’s under pressure. But with the pace and creative flow of George’s, Tynemouth were always going to struggle and two more goals so them go into the interval 5 – 0 down.
With no pressure on them and an 11th man found, Tynemouth managed to get in the game more. Chances (although few) were created and short corners won but none were taken. With legs tiring after a superb effort Georges were able to score two more goals, and if it was not for some resolute performances in defence (notably an evergreen Toby Raimes) the score may have been more.
Defeated yes, but heads held high after a spirited and determined performance which can only bode well for the rest of the season and the future. There were many positives to come from the game with Matt Jackson having by far his best game for the club and newcomer Ollie Harding-
The over riding question at the end of the game was “what could we have done with a full strength side?”
Final Score: Whitley Bay and Tynemouth 0 – 7 Northumbria St. Georges
*Special thanks must go to Steve Troup for umpiring the second half and allowing Tynemouth a full complement of players.
