It was Shields who took an early lead after one of their players took on half the Tyne team and placed the ball on the foot – the well worked short corner was quickly slotted home.
This kicked Tyne into action and following a well worked counter attack Dave Ridley hammered it home from five yards. No sooner had the ball hit the net the unnamed cavalry stripped off and returned to action and quickly restored Shields’ lead giving them a 2 – 1 half time advantage.
A stirring half time team talk by captain MacKellar saw Tyne return to the style of hockey that’s seen them to third in the league and it was no surprise when Dan Adams levelled things up again with a shot slotted home from a tight angle.
Within five minutes their lead was to be restored. Six players beaten and a pass out wide before a strike to the bottom corner saw Shields take a 3-
But this isn’t a Tyne team that gives up and with just three seconds remaining Tyne found their third equaliser when Ean MacKellar slotted home a short corner to cue jubilation in the ranks.
Make no mistake this was Tynemouth’s best performance of the season and despite only gaining a point they have now positioned themselves to where promotion is a real possibility.
