Leeds 1 v WBTHC 1

WBTHC 1 v Leeds 1

After a comfortable 6-1 home win last week, WBTHC 1s looked to make it two wins out of two after Christmas with a difficult trip to Leeds, who were also pushing for a promotion spot.

In the opening minutes of the game, Leeds held the ball in their own half for long periods, patiently waiting for openings in which to attack. WBTHC were equally patient with their formation and play, defending deep in a structured unit, looking to utilise their forwards pace on the break. Leeds, although having much of the ball became increasingly frustrated as they struggled to work the ball past the visitors defence, in particular man of the match Andy Hayes, who marshalled his defence from the back and led by example with some fine tackling.

Twenty minutes into the game, the Leeds desire to commit men forward to try and break the WBTHC defence led to the first goal, however it was the visitors who took the lead as their game plan started to work perfectly. A quick break for WBTHC meant Leeds were left short at the back and the pace of Lockey and Titmus created a close range chance for Wood, who converted to open the scoring.  A few minutes later WBTHC made it 0-2 with another breakaway goal, this time converted by Andy Titmus from a tight angle and leaving the Leeds team in a state of confusion. With half time fast approaching Leeds managed to grab a goal back from a well finished short corner, powerfully flicked into the bottom left hand corner, leaving Fotheringham little chance.

The 2nd half passed much like the first with Leeds enjoying possession but not being able to get near the WBTHC circle as the away team’s formation looked very solid. With ten minutes remaining, Leeds won a number of short corners in quick succession; however Goalkeeper Blair Fotheringham and his defence saved brilliantly to deny the equaliser. The home team now had little choice but to throw men forward at every opportunity, but it was again the visitors who flew out of defence with a lightening break from Alex Lockey down the right hand wing, only to square the ball in front of the stranded Leeds keeper, for Titmus to sweep home from five yards and end the game to the delight and smiles of the visiting team.
